GAME INSTRUCTIONS

GAME INSTRUCTIONS

FIRST-N-TEN is a team game, played with 4 players (2 teams of 2). Each team faces off on the FIRST-N-TEN gridiron, throwing two game rings back and forth until one team scores 21 points.  The distance between each goal post is 30 feet. (Tournament play is 40 feet)

Teammates stand at opposite ends near their respective goal post which is called the (ENDZONE AREA). The end zone consists of a 5’ diameter area around the goal post. Each team has 2 official FIRST-N-TEN game rings. Players throw the rings at the opposite goal post to score points. The players partner can deflect and assist the ring into scoring position. Player throwing their rings must remain behind their goal post. Offenders who commit an off-sides infraction could be assessed a 5 foot penalty on their next turn. It is the responsibility of the opposing team player to call it while the ring is in the air. No points will be awarded if an off-sides infraction is called.

When a player is throwing their rings, the opposing player must remain outside the endzone area. If a player accidentally interferes with another player, the team that was interfered with, has the option to replay the point. If interference is deemed deliberate, the team forfeits the game.

ORDER OF PLAY

To start play, teams need to determine order of play. A coin toss can decide. If no coin is available, teams choose one end to throw. The team with the closest ring to the center pole will designate order of play. The winning team chooses to go first or last. Teams playing last are considered to be in the Redemption Position. Teams in the Redemption position has the ability to tie the game and send the game into sudden death. If however, the team playing last scores 21 pts first, the game is over.

SUDDEN DEATH

If the team going second ties the game at 21 points, the game goes into sudden death. Teams will play one round. A round consists of all 4 players throwing two rings. The team with the most points in the round is the winner. If no points or an equal number of points are scored in the round, additional rounds continue until one team out scores the other team in any given round.

SCORING SYSTEM

1 point - HIT THE UPRIGHT : When the player hits any part of the uprights, caps, elbows, crossbar, tee or base pole, 1 point is scored. No points are awarded if the player hits any legs.

3 points—FIELD GOAL:  A ring that is thrown between the two uprights, 3 points are awarded. Throwing your hands in the air and screaming, “field goal” will not be considered taunting. However, subsequent over-celebrating could result in a 5-foot penalty on your next shot. (NOTE: No points are awarded if the ring flies above the upright.)

5 points - RINGING THE UPRIGHT: If a player rings the either the left or right   upright, 5 points are awarded.

TIP DRILL

Each teammate has the opportunity to help score points. Teammates can deflect rings into scoring position. The same number of points are awarded regardless of deflection or not.

INSTANT WIN

If a team rings both the left and right upright on the same turn, the result is an instant win. The game is over. The other team “DOES NOT” get the opportunity to tie the game.

The team that scores 21 points exactly is the winner if the opposing team can not match the score. Teams have the opportunity to score 1,3, or 5 points on any throw. However, if the last ring results in a score over 21 points, those points are deducted from their score. If the player scored over 21 points on their first throw, they forfeit their second ring and points are deducted.

END OF GAME

At the conclusion of the game, any and all taunting and over celebration penalties are no longer in effect. Chanting’s such as “We are the Champions” or “Winner—Winner Chicken Dinner” are acceptable. However, sustained unsportsmanship like behavior is frowned upon.

SAMPLE SCORING

If a team hits the inside of the uprights or the crossbar and passes through, only 3 points are awarded.

If a team gets both rings on the same upright; 10 points are awarded (5 pts for each ring). IT IS NOT AN INSTANT WIN!

Regardless of any accumulated points throughout the game, if a team rings both the left and right upright, they achieve an instant win—game over!

An example of a team scoring over 21 points: If a team had a score of 20 points and while attempting to just hit an upright, scores a field goal, The team looses 3 points and goes back to 17 points.

ALTERNATE PLAY

Two Player Game. If you only have 2 players, you can choose this alternate scoring. Each player plays from the opposite goal post. The player throwing the rings can earn points in the same manner as normal play. However, any ring that goes wide or high gives the opposing player the right to deflect the ring. If a deflection results in a score, the player who deflected the ring gets the points.

Additional Teams-with an extra 4-pk of Rings; play with 3 or 4 teams together.

1. Play to the first team to 21 pts or

2. Play mini-tournament style. Each team stops at 21 pts eliminating the last team. Play resumes for 3 teams eliminating one more team. The final 2 teams play for the ultimate winner.
